Was that the sound of the cannon
or the sound from the big bell
during this winter afternoon ?

Tượng Phật không đầu
trăng thu tìm thấy
trong lòng suối sâu.
A headless statue of Buddha
lost in the deep creek bed
autumn moon happens to discover
*
Dưới mái chùa quê
ba ngày chim sẻ
vẫn chưa trở về.
For three days in a row
under the village temple
no returning signs of the sparrow
*
Chiến trận đi qua
cây khô nảy lộc
xuyên qua mái nhà.
Battle of war is over
new growth on dry trunk
shooting through roof cover
*
Rêu cỏ đơm hoa
lấp đầy lỗ đạn
trên thân Phật đà.
Covering the bullet scars
patches of moss flowering
on the statue of Buddha.

Hố bom giữa đồng
sáng nay vừa nở
một bông sen hồng.
In the field this morning
from the bomb craters
a pink lotus is rising.

Hoả châu trên cao
chốc chốc thắp sáng
rừng hoa anh đào.
Fireballs above looming
intermittently alights
the cherry forest in blooming.

Tiếng dế vang ca
bên trong lỗ đạn
trên thân Phật đà.
Crickets cried near and far
from the bullet holes
on the statue of Buddha

''Mùa đông tới rồi!''
nói cho tôi biết
mảnh bom trong người.
“It’s winter fresh!”
reminds me about it
the bomb shell in my flesh.

Kìa những chú mèo vàng
sáng ngày mai sẽ được
bán trong phiên chợ làng.
Those cats with fur golden sleek
will be for sale tomorrow
at the village market’s meet.

Ở trên mặt hồ xanh
giữa trưa hè bom nổ
sóng gợn lên mấy lần.
On the surface of the blue lake
the bombs exploding mid-noon
ripples appeared from the shake.

Vầng trăng sáng giữa trời
kìa một con ốc nhỏ
bò xung quanh miệng nồi.
In the bright sky of moon shining
there a tiny snail prevails
at the rim of pot, crawling.

Tiếng đại bác vọng vang
vỡ ra trên mặt nước
một bầy đom đóm vàng.
Echoes from the cannon
splattered on water surface
fireflies swarming golden.

Chỉ còn lại mình tôi
và tiếng kêu chim trĩ
ở bên trên ngọn đồi.
Only myself left to count
on the very hilltop
the pheasant’s sounds.

Sau một trận tương tàn
trên chiến trường, đây đó
bồ công anh nở vàng.
After the deadly battle show
on the war ground, here there
dandelions bloomed yellow.

Nước mắt khóc người xưa
chiều hôm nay rơi xuống
cùng cơn mưa đầu mùa.
Tears for the past souls
falling with evening raindrops
at beginning of the season.

Trong đêm dài mùa đông
tiếng chân ai dừng lại
một hồi lâu trước phòng.
In the long night of winter remission
a sound of someone stopping
in front of my room for a long intermission.

Dẫu nến đã tắt rồi
nhưng nụ cười đức Phật
vẫn hiện lên rạng ngời.
Although the candle blown out
the image of smiling Buddha
still brightly flickering about.

Cắt đi mảnh cà sa
cốt để không đánh thức
chú mèo lười của ta.
Cutting off my robe, my choosing
than to disturb my lazy cat
while it is snoozing.

Ôi cõi Phật nào đây
mà sao hoa mận trắng
bốn phương trời tung bay!
Which Buddha land is this
that white plum flowers falling
in all directions.

Y phục của tăng nhân
đặt ở trên phiến đá
bên một làn nước xanh.
The monk’s attire
placed on the rock face
next to stream of blue water.

Chỉ thoáng một sát na
bóng hình người con gái
hiện ra trong chén trà.
Only momentarily
a girl’s image in the tea cup
only evanescently.
*
Kìa đám mây giang hồ
trưa hôm nay dừng lại
trên một đồng cỏ khô.
The clouds of adventure
hovering about this afternoon
over the dry pasture.

Theo tiếng chuông đại hùng
tìm đến ngôi cổ tự
sâu bên trong rừng tùng.
Following the sound of the great bell
to an ancient temple
in the heart of the pine jungle.

Cơn bão đêm vừa qua
cô gái cầm ngọn nến
soi vào trong chuồng gà.
The night storm is over. Then
the girl shines a candle
to check on the chicken pen.

Xuân đến trong làng chài
trước nhà nào cũng có
lũ mèo hoang nằm dài.
Spring arrived at the fishing village
with feral cats lying
at every house’s frontage.
