The old master would routinely display
His red paper and black ink stock
On the sidewalk filled with passers-by
Many would pay to get his calligraphy
While praising his penmanship profusely
“Each written stroke looks like a dragon flying
Or a phoenix dancing gracefully”
But his admirers became fewer and fewer
Missing his loyal customers
The red paper was fading away
The black ink gloomy inside the containers
The old master still sat in the same spot
Passers-by, mindful they appeared not
Dead leaves were falling on the paper
And drizzle weeping for his lot
‘Tis that time again for the peach blossoms
Yet the old master does not seem to come
O all those people of years past
Where their souls are, no one can fathom

Mỗi năm hoa đào nở
Lại thấy ông đồ già
Bày mực tàu, giấy đỏ
Bên phố đông người qua
Bao nhiêu người thuê viết
Tấm tắc ngợi khen tài
“Hoa tay thảo những nét
Như phượng múa rồng bay”
Nhưng mỗi năm mỗi vắng
Người thuê viết nay đâu?
Giấy đỏ buồn không thắm
Mực đọng trong nghiên sầu
Ông đồ vẫn ngồi đấy
Qua đường không ai hay
Lá vàng rơi trên giấy
Ngoài trời mưa bụi bay
Năm nay đào lại nở
Không thấy ông đồ xưa
Những người muôn năm cũ
Hồn ở đâu bây giờ?
